Optimizing for Local Search

by k.schneider on July 8, 2009

You know the saying about real estate, the three most important features are “location, location, location.”  Well, the same goes for doing SEO for Realtors.  You need people buying and selling in your specialty area to find you, not those across the country.  Therefore, optimizing for a local search is the most important thing a Realtor can do.  First, submit your business to local directories like the Google Local Business Center, Yahoo Local FeaturesBing Local, Yellow Pages, Super Pages, Localeze, etc.  There are others, but the most important thing to remember is to verify that the information in all of these directories is accurate and consistent.  This gives Google confidence that they have your correct contact information and will rank you higher.  Some of the search engine companies will call the phone number you listed or send a postcard to the address to verify the information before your listing is activated to check for accuracy.  It helps to also be listed on websites associated with your local area like a chamber of commerce.  The more often and consistently your information is listed online, the better you will rank.  Some of these websites allow your clients to comment on your real estate services.  The quantity of reviews also helps increase your real estate listing.  However, even if no one writes a review, don’t worry.  Most real estate agents don’t submit their businesses to these sites so even if you just submit your contact information and specialty you’ll be ahead of your competition.
